If you asked around town amongst the other people that were homeless in Winchester then you’d soon find out that everyone knows terry. ‘That happy harmonica player’ was the response when I asked if people had seen him. Terry held a lot of self respect in himself and never asked anyone for change. Once he teared up asking me for 75p so that he could get enough for gas and electric for the night. He would always sit there and play his harmonica when he wasn’t chatting with someone.
Through taking these pictures terry wanted me to share his story and I gladly agreed, he even started to write out his entire life story so that I could use exeprts in my work. However, after his house burnt down he was moved to Southampton where I haven’t seen him. I hope and pray that he comes into my life again soon.
So I did this very small set of pictures with Terry as the subject, I knew I couldn’t capture the whole of what I was wanting to, but that’s ok. I just wanted a few people to know. The idea for basing my domesticity on him came when we were speaking and he just said,  “Every where’s my home”. This was so sadly true. But there really was hope in sight for him. This photo [right] was taken minutes after I lent Terry just £7. He needed this £7 by 9p.m that night or his proposed landlord would have given his council house to someone else. So terry got a house to live in while I bought one less dosage of fast food that month. He did get his house, which was burnt down by the end of the week.
Terry became like a brother to me and I found out more and more about his past, being beaten as a child by every male role, dealing with schizophrenia and being mildly bi-polar was just the start of it really. His story affected me and I wanted to do everything I could for him. The questions of why on earth has this man been given this life whilst there are so many perfectly able and rich idiots that walk this earth? I felt almost unworthy with the kindness and happiness, which he displayed for the majority of his time with me.
It was around about October 2011 I was walking through Winchester town center that I was feeling pretty sad about something, which was probably very unimportant, yet it still made me feel sad enough to do something good. People search for feeling good and I figured it feels good to see people smile, so I set out to do exactly that. I bumped into a homeless man named Terry Gibson; bought him a big hot chocolate from Starbucks; and chatted with him. Found out bits and bobs about his life and moved on.
It wasn’t until 2 months later that I saw him again and I stopped once more, carrying out the same procedure. Through various people I knew in winch, I started spending a lot more regular time in Winchester. This lead to a lot more time spent with terry, so through the winter months I became good friends with terry. Once or twice a week I would stop and chat with Terry, sharing a hot drink. It was an absolute pleasure to talk to this man with no expectation from either of us of anything. He would never ask for money and would even buy me a drink from time to time. There really is no more humbling experience than having a man with no home offer to buy your drink.
